What is anxiety?

  • Most people have anxiety sometimes but if it feels like anxiety rules your life, you might have an anxiety disorder. Having uncomfortable anxiety symptoms can make it hard to go about your daily life and might make you avoid places or activities that cause increased anxiety.

  • Anxiety symptoms can include: excessive fears and worries, feeling apprehensive or tense, anxious thoughts and predictions, avoiding things, and physical reactions like shortness of breath or racing heart.

  • If you have anxiety, you might also have panic attacks, which are sudden, intense episodes of anxiety.

  • Depression and anxiety often go together.

  • There are different kinds of anxiety, some of which include: phobias, panic disorders, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety.

  • If you have experienced childhood abuse or neglect or another type of trauma, anxiety could be the way your mind and body adapted to protect you, by constantly scanning for danger in an attempt to prevent bad things from happening.

  • Some people take medications to help with anxiety. Journaling and exercise can also be helpful, as well as reaching out to a therapist for anxiety counselling.
