What is perfectionism?

  • Perfectionism is when a person has excissively high standards for themselves and is also very self-critical. Perfectionists may peform very well at work or in school but it comes at a cost to their mental health, sometimes leading to burnout. At times, perfectionism can actually make it harder to get things done, leading to procrastination

  • A fear of failure or judgment by others can drive perfectionism, as well as low self-esteem and anxiety. There is also a link between perfectionism and trauma. If you experienced childhood abuse or neglect, you might have developed perfectionism as a way to cope and try to get your needs met.

  • Examining your core beliefs about yourself can be a helpful step in addressing perfectionism. Challenging unrealistic or unfair thinking can also be a useful strategy.
